Can Old Siding be Recycled?

April is Earth Month, but year-round sustainability is still important, which is why Excel Home Improvement always recycles old siding. If you’ve ever wondered how different types of materials are recycled, we’ve got the answers for you.

How Vinyl is Recycled

Project after project, taking down vinyl siding adds up. Instead of dumping it into a landfill, old material can be processed and recycled. Excel Home Improvement maintains a partnership with Fryman’s Recycling, a company that helps make projects sustainable. Once a project in done, the old vinyl siding is brought back to the shop until it gets picked up. Fryman’s recycles the material, which redirects it from landfills. Recycled vinyl can be can then be used for several things like new siding and decking.

How Aluminum is Recycled

Aluminum is one of the most recyclable materials around. Because of its makeup, aluminum is considered effectively “infinitely recyclable,” allowing it to be put back into the production supply chain. This saves energy needed to make new aluminum, in turn saving the client money. Excel Home Improvement uses an aluminum baler to start the recycling process in-house. Scraps from trim and siding projects are compressed into cubes and saved until one of several recycling companies comes and picks up a semi-truck’s worth of material. Ultimately, recycled material uses 5% of the energy needed to make new aluminum and saves millions of barrels of oil a year, making it one of the most sustainable materials used on homes today.
